CAMPAIGNERS AND LOCAL MP SPEAK OUT IN FIRST OF NEW SERIES OF PUBLIC MEETINGS ON HEATHROW
Local campaign group Stop Heathrow Expansion joined local MP John McDonnell at Heathrow Primary school in Sipson on Thursday evening (16 March) for the first in a new series of public meetings on Heathrow expansion.
At the meeting, John McDonnell explained the parliamentary timetable that Heathrow expansion is subject to, as well as voicing concerns about the Department for Transport’s consultation, which many residents were angered about after the DfT’s failure to hold any of the local consultation events in any of the Heathrow villages. Jackie Clark, chair of Stop Heathrow Expansion, the local campaign group fighting the proposals, gave an update on the campaign as well as explaining future action and activities.
Jackie Clark, Chair of Stop Heathrow Expansion, said: “This was a lively meeting that covered a number of topics relating to the third runway, but one thing is clear: we do not want to go. This meeting reignited the fire in our bellies to fight this monstrous proposal.”
John McDonnell, MP for Hayes and Harlington, speaking after the meeting, said: “This was the first in the latest series of public meetings that I have organised across the constituency. There is real opposition to the third runway.
“The strong message from these meetings is that local residents are going to fight the government all the way.
“Local residents are rightfully angry at the prospect of losing their homes, schools, community centre and village life, let alone the noise levels, traffic and pollution that will increase in the area.
“As a community, we are more determined than ever to stop this runway from going ahead.”
The next pubic meeting will be held on Thursday 23 March at Harlington Baptist Church Hall at 7.30pm. Further meetings across Hayes and West Drayton will be announced shortly.
Ends.
