TIREDNESS KILLS – END HEATHROW NIGHT FLIGHTS

Ending night flights at Heathrow would improve the health and wellbeing of unrivalled numbers of people. Last month we reported on the gutless decision by the Department for Transport to extend the existing night flights arrangements to 2025, despite there being no mention of this date during the consultation that took place earlier in the year. Residents reacted furiously to the news.

The next and final part of the consultation (for now) is looking at long term night flights policy beyond 2025. Although night flights won’t disappear before this date, this ‘long term’ element of the process offers the opportunity to tell the Government why night flights should be scrapped.

It is time to recognise the significant impacts of these flights on the health and wellbeing of large numbers of people when Government finalises policy for the long term and to not simply prioritise the views of the aviation industry, who will always want more night flights.

The final deadline for responses to this consultation is Friday 3rd September.

We have published our full response as well as a suggested response that you may like to use if you do not have the time to wade through all 71 questions.

Please make your views known to the Government; it is important to do so.

Last week we launched our new campaign banner – ‘Tiredness Kills – End Heathrow Night Flights’ with local councillors and Hayes & Harlington MP John McDonnell.

JET ZERO – JUST MORE HOT AIR

The Government have launched a consultation on ‘Jet Zero’ emissions for the aviation sector, which runs until 8th September.

The consultation was written on the back of advice from the Climate Change Committee. However, it rejected one of the key proposals – demand management – to restrict airport expansion.

We believe that until the Government reject expansion at Heathrow, which would bring an additional 700 polluting flights per day to the airport, the rest of the proposals, however credible, are fatally undermined.

We will be highlighting these facts in various ways between now and the close of the consultation on 8thSeptember – follow our social media (links at the bottom of the page) for the latest updates.

If you would like to respond to the consultation, here is some guidance you may wish to use, written by Aviation Environment Federation.

MEDIA LETTERS

We have had several letters published in local media titles recently. These were on the theme of night flights – reminding readers to respond to the consultation on long term night flights policy.

The letters also highlighted the unfairness in asking the entire population to make expensive lifestyle changes to meet Net Zero targets, while huge environmentally damaging projects like Heathrow expansion remain on the table. Click on our letters page to read more.

LOCAL EVENTS IN SEPTEMBER

In September there are several special events in Harmondsworth, mostly at the Great Barn, in Manor Court, UB7 0AQ.

Over the weekend 4-5 September, the Barn will be open 11am-4pm each day as part of Open House London, celebrating its nearly 600 years of history.

On 12 September, the Barn is again open as part of Heritage Open Day’s Edible England  festival  when the focus will be on locally grown food from medieval times to present day allotments.

A fortnight later, on 26 September, the Allotments in Moor Lane, Harmondsworth, will be open to visitors 12 noon to 3pm, and the Barn will also be open again, 11am-4pm.

Warm Regards,
