Night flights consultation
The Government are running a consultation on night flights. The consultation has been split into two parts.
Part 1 focuses on two key areas and closes on 3rd March 2021:
extending the existing night flights regime beyond its current expiry date of October 2022 until October 2024
stopping the use of QC4-rated aircraft at night.
Part 2 looks at long term policy on night flights beyond 2024. This part of the consultation will close on 31st May 2021.
See the full consultation here.
We have provided a guide with our views on issues relating to the first part of the consultation, to assist you with your response. We will provide a guide to the second part of the consultation in due course.
You can send your responses by email to night.flights@dft.gov.uk. Please also copy your response to us at info@stopheathrowexpansion.co.uk and include the first part of your postcode. This will enable us to hold Heathrow to account in any future consultation where flight numbers may increase.
New Leadership at Hillingdon Council
A new Leader of Hillingdon Council took office on 14th January, succeeding Cllr Sir Ray Puddifoot MBE, who had led the Council since 2000. We would like to wish Cllr Puddifoot all the very best for the future and thank him for his strong opposition to Heathrow expansion over many, many years.
We warmly welcome Cllr Ian Edwards to his new role and look forward to working with him in the period ahead, as we seek to stop Heathrow Expansion for good. In one of his first announcements, Cllr Edwards confirmed that his administration will continue to strongly oppose Heathrow expansion. Click on the image below for more.
People’s Question Time
People’s Question Time returns, virtually, at 7pm on Thursday 11th February. This is a chance to ask questions on the Mayor of London and London Assembly Members.
On the night you will be able to ask questions using the ‘chat’ function. As elections for Mayor and the London Assembly are coming up this May, we suggest asking whether assembly members and the Mayor will continue to oppose Heathrow expansion and what actions they will pursue to stop it from happening.
Heathrow Legal challenges
The Good Law Project announced that they will be taking legal action if the Government does not review the Airports National Policy Statement.
Plan B Earth will be launching an appeal on Heathrow expansion to the European Court of Human Rights, on the basis that Chris Grayling’s reliance on the 2-degree temperature rise when agreeing plans to expand Heathrow, were considered “inadequate and dangerous by the international community” and so is a breach of the right to life.
We will keep you updated on the progress of both challenges.
Heathrow want reduced accountability
Heathrow are consulting on reducing its various community forums. As Stop Heathrow Expansion, we don’t sit on any of these forums, but we know plenty of community organisations with an interest in making areas around Heathrow a better place to live, who do have places on them. Heathrow’s ‘streamlining’ of this community engagement appears to be a drive to reduced accountability which flies in the face of the Airport’s repeated pledges to act as a better neighbour. The pandemic is no reason to reduce that engagement.
Let Heathrow know your views on their plans to reduce accountability by 5pm on Friday 12 February.
Warm regards and stay safe,
Stop Heathrow Expansion Committee
