DON’T MASK THE FACTS – IT’S TIME TO SCRAP HEATHROW EXPANSION

Campaigners believe that the Supreme Court should uphold a Court of Appeal ruling which stated that Heathrow expansion plans should not proceed on the basis that the Paris climate change agreement was not taken into account when plans to expand the airport were drawn up by the Government.

The Supreme Court are hearing Heathrow’s appeal to the ruling on 7th and 8th October, which will be live-streamed. Plan B Earth, an environmental charity and Friends of the Earth, are be putting forward the case for the Court of Appeal ruling to be upheld. A verdict is expected in early 2021.

Campaigners attended the Supreme Court on the morning of the first hearings (7th October), unveiling a new banner calling for Heathrow not to mask the facts and for expansion to be scrapped, with supporters pictured wearing Stop Heathrow Expansion face masks.

Richard Fremantle, Chair of Stop Heathrow Expansion, commented: “Don’t mask the facts! Plans to expand Heathrow have been debated for too long yet the fact remains that Heathrow expansion is incompatible with our climate change obligations to pursue efforts to limit the global temperature rise by 1.5 degrees by 2050. Nothing has changed since the Court of Appeal’s ruling in February this year which stated the plans for a third runway failed to take the Paris agreement into account. We owe it to our environment, both locally and nationally, to stop these damaging proposals before it is too late. We hope the Supreme Court uphold the Court of Appeal’s ruling.”
