Heathrow expansion still has 'hurdles in the way'

THE recent Supreme Court decision on Heathrow expansion declared the Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS) still stands and is legal. But it did not give the go ahead for a 3rd runway. A lot has changed since the ANPS vote in Parliament in 2018.
There are many more hurdles for Heathrow to overcome before they can even submit a planning application.
The pandemic has also added to their problems, with the prospect of air travel demand not recovering to 2019 levels for a number of years, rendering all the projections of the ANPS largely irrelevant.
Furthermore, a 3rd runway MUST meet our climate commitments which have been strengthened significantly since 2018 and with Net Zero emissions by 2050 enshrined into law in 2019.
The Government should now withdraw the ANPS and a full review of aviation, which must include all airports in all regions and nations throughout the UK, must be undertaken.
